Without it, vaccines would spoil long before reaching their destination. But it is difficult to maintain in countries where the power supply is as bumpy as the roads. Read more.
Guinea worm
| |
Traditional tribal methods of ridding the body of guinea worm include the use of heated steel lances made from nails and clay. | Guinea worms invade bodies, grow to 5 feet long and dangle like strands of spaghetti from the openings they create in legs. While not usually fatal, they are excruciatingly painful, incapacitating some 100,000 people in the tropics every year. The Carter Center leads a guinea worm eradication project in Nigeria and received part of a $28.5 million grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to finally eliminate the disease.
