The Cold Chain in action
|
Through the efforts of many players on several continents the chain has been made stronger and its weak links easier to spot. Global coordination efforts Temperature sensitivity of vaccines has driven the development of two immunization programs, routine and campaign, to get the widest possible coverage with the lowest rate of spoilage. By nature, routine immunization programs are more difficult to maintain because they are designed to provide a regular supply of vaccines over months or years, while immunization campaigns are often semiannual events that target large numbers of people in a few days. Both programs face the Cold Chain coordination challenges. This section illustrates the obstacles as shown in a recent UNICEF campaign in West Africa. Once the vaccine is ready to go, aid organizations have 24 days to transport it to transport it to its ultimate destination. |
