A woman who fled the scene after her car struck and killed a bicyclist has been ordered to serve one day in jail and pay $4,650 in restitution.
Her husband will serve a 60-day term and share in the restitution bill for hampering the police investigation by hiding his wife's damaged car under a tarp and then removing its broken windshield.
Spokane County Superior Court Judge Gregory Sypolt ordered the sentences against Martha and Thomas Duxbury.
Martha Duxbury, 33, pleaded guilty last week to the gross misdemeanor of hit-and-run with an injury in the Sept. 16, 1997, death of Harold Grammer.
Thomas Duxbury, 37, pleaded guilty to second-degree rendering criminal assistance, a gross misdemeanor.
The Duxburys also were ordered to each serve 30 days of community service.
In addition, Martha Duxbury's driver's license was suspended for at least a year.
Both had originally been charged with felony crimes that could have produced prison terms of at least one year.
The pleas resulted from evidence that Martha Duxbury suffers a number of psychological disorders, deputy prosecutor Dianne Dougherty said.
Police believe she didn't see Grammer, 32, who was bicycling to work at 5:25 a.m. when he was struck by the sedan. Duxbury, who was driving alone, left the scene.
Establishing intentional flight from the accident scene would have been difficult, Dougherty said.
