Toolbox: Sawhorses speed the job by bringing it to waist level

By NEIL STOCKMAN

Tool: Sawhorses

Uses: These guys come in handy for many tasks and their uses are almost endless. That's probably why they've been around for countless years and will be around for many more.

You need to know: Sawhorses are a quick way to set up an elevated place to work. They provide a simple, efficient and cheap way to ease whatever task you are working on. At first sawhorses were made out wood, which would be great if you still lived in the buggy era. Fortunately, we've moved on to a more advanced lifestyle. Modern-day sawhorses are nothing like their predecessors. The only resemblance is they still have four legs. Today's sawhorses have been designed with many more features, and may be produced from different mediums, from plastic to steel. Metal sawhorses are usually galvanized and rust-resistant. Whether you decide to go metal or plastic, most sawhorses are foldable for easy storage, have anti-slip rubber feet, provide v-grooves for working with pipes, and may even come with built-in power strips.

Cost: Don't get me wrong -- wood sawhorses still can be found for around $14 or so. The more advanced sawhorses with multifunctional designs can be purchased for around $50.

Rent, borrow, or buy: To be honest, I've always found a way to be creative in the way I did things, so sawhorses weren't on the top of my list as an item that I should own. However, as I get older I realize how much more easily and quickly I could have finished projects if I had owned a pair of sawhorses. Call me crazy, but today I own two pairs -- just in case! That being said, I will let you determine your own sawhorse fate.

All in All: Sawhorses rule!
