NL Notes: Nationals make flurry of moves
WASHINGTON -- The Washington Nationals brought back Zach Day by claiming him off waivers from the Rockies on Wednesday, and optioned Billy Traber to Triple-A New Orleans.
The Nationals also called up right-handed reliever Jason Bergmann from Triple-A, designated New Orleans catcher Wiki Gonzalez for assignment, and said they plan to purchase the contract of left-hander Mike O'Connor from New Orleans so he can start Washington's game today at St. Louis, which would mark his major league debut.
Day returns to the Nationals after going to Colorado in the trade that sent Preston Wilson to Washington last season. He has muscle spasms in his shoulder and might have to go on the disabled list, general manager Jim Bowden said.
John Patterson was slated to pitch today, but he is skipping a turn in the rotation because of a strained muscle in his right forearm.
SHORT HOPS: Braves manager Bobby Cox said SS Edgar Renteria is on track to return Friday after straining his left rib cage against San Diego on April 15. ... The Mets signed OF Michael Tucker to a minor league deal and he was scheduled to report to the team's extended spring training team in Port St. Lucie, Fla. ... Padres RHP Chris Young is expected to start as scheduled Friday against the Dodgers after medication helped alleviate reduced blood flow to an artery in his pitching thumb. ... The Brewers optioned reliever Mike Adams to Triple-A Nashville after Wednesday's 5-4 victory over the Braves. Adams' ERA had swelled to 11.57. ... X-rays were negative on Cubs C Michael Barrett, who jammed his right middle finger sliding headfirst into second base Tuesday. ... The Phillies placed reliever Julio Santana on the 15-day disabled list and called up Clay Condrey.
