NL Notes: Pujols MRI yields little information

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

ST. LOUIS -- The timetable for Albert Pujols' return was still uncertain Monday after an MRI exam of a strained muscle on his right side was inconclusive.

The Cardinals, who placed Pujols on the 15-day disabled list Sunday, had hoped for more concrete information. Pujols said he felt better Monday, but didn't know what that meant.

"It could be two weeks, it could be three, four, five or six," Pujols said. "Whatever weeks it's going to be, I'm going to take my time. It's terrible, but what can I do? I don't want to shoot myself."

SHORT HOPS: Astros RHP Roger Clemens said he's not looking past the Lake County Captains, the Single-A team he'll face tonight when he pitches in Lexington, Ky., for the Lexington Legends. Clemens, who will be backed by his son, Koby, who plays third base for Lexington, likely will throw about 60 pitches. ... Reds CF Ken Griffey Jr. homered in his 43rd stadium on Monday, connecting in his first game at new Busch Stadium to tie Fred McGriff for the major league record. The homer was Griffey's ninth of the year, 545th of his career. ... The Pirates placed C Ryan Doumit on the 15-day disabled list because of a torn left hamstring that could sideline him up to two months. Doumit was hitting .214 with two homers and seven RBIs in 26 games. ... Brewers RF Geoff Jenkins wasn't in the starting lineup against the Padres Monday night, a day after he collided with 1B Prince Fielder. Jenkins is day-to-day with a concussion. ... Nationals RHP Livan Hernandez ended an 11-game losing streak to the Braves. He had been 0-11 with a 5.95 ERA in his past 15 starts against them. ... Cubs SS Ronny Cedeno extended his hitting streak to a career-high 10 games.
