AL Notes: Patterson extends stolen base streak

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

BALTIMORE -- Baltimore OF Corey Patterson extended his streak of games with a stolen base to nine on Monday. It's the longest run in the majors since Rickey Henderson had an identical stretch in 1986.

Patterson also scored two runs in the Orioles' 4-0 victory over the Blue Jays. Patterson leads the big leagues with 26 steals. He's been caught only once.

CABRERA TOSSES GEM: Baltimore RHP Daniel Cabrera (3-2) was activated Monday then blanked the Blue Jays for five innings, allowing only three hits and striking out nine.

Toronto, which came into the game with a major-league leading .303 team average, was without 3B Troy Glaus, who had a stiff back after colliding with a teammate Sunday.

SHORT HOPS: A bruised right thumb kept Yankees SS Derek Jeter out of the starting lineup Monday night in the opener of a four-game series against the Red Sox. Jeter, hit by a pitch from Baltimore's Rodrigo Lopez on Sunday, had his thumb wrapped in a bandage. X-rays, however, showed no serious injury. The last time Jeter didn't play in a game against the Red Sox was Sept. 6, 2003, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. He missed that one because of a strained rib cage. ... The Royals sent RHP Seth Etherton to Triple-A Omaha two days after he allowed seven runs in 2 2/3 innings to the Mariners. The Royals called up right-hander Leo Nunez from Omaha to take his roster spot. Nunez will work from the bullpen. ... Tampa Bay 2B Jorge Cantu (left foot) is expected to be activated from the 15-day disabled list today. ... Angels SS Orlando Cabrera walked in the third, tying Chili Davis' team record (1995) of reaching base on a walk, hit or hit by pitch in 36 consecutive games.
