AL Notes: Clement's rehab start cut short

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Boston's Matt Clement cut short his first minor league rehabilitation start after one inning Tuesday after hurting his right biceps.

The outing with the Gulf Coast League Red Sox was Clement's first since he went on the 15-day disabled list June 16 with a right shoulder strain. His next scheduled rehab start -- Sunday with Double-A Portland -- is in doubt.

Also, left fielder Manny Ramirez is not expected to play in next week's All-Star Game because of knee soreness.

YANKEES WIN BIDDING: The New York Yankees have signed 16-year-old Venezuelan catcher Jesus Montero to a $2 million deal, according to published reports. The Yankees outbid Boston, Cleveland and the Mets for Montero shortly after the international signing period began late Saturday night, several newspapers reported.

SHORT HOPS: Outfielder Jason Michaels was activated from the 15-day disabled list by the Indians and was in the starting lineup against the Yankees. Michaels had been on the DL since June 24. He had sprained his right ankle nine days earlier. ... Orioles 2B Brian Roberts is hitting .352 in his past 26 games and has reached safely with a hit in 22 of those games.
