AL Notes: Benson to have elbow examined
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Orioles right-hander Kris Benson returned to Baltimore on Wednesday to have his sore elbow examined.
Benson pitched six innings, allowing four runs, three earned, and eight hits, including two home runs, and walking three in a no-decision in a 7-5 loss at Kansas City on Tuesday night. Benson is 0-4 with a 6.52 ERA in five starts this month.
Benson, who is 9-9 with a 4.71 ERA in 21 starts, is scheduled to pitch again Sunday against Chicago, but that is subject to change as the Orioles are waiting on the test results.
SHORT HOPS: Devil Rays LHP Scott Kazmir will miss his scheduled start Friday against the Yankees because of shoulder soreness. The Devil Rays do not consider the problem serious and expect Kazmir, 22, to pitch Tuesday against Detroit. ... The Tigers called up RHP Colby Lewis from Triple-A Toledo. To make room for Lewis, the Tigers designated OF Alexis Gomez for assignment. ... Angels starter Bartolo Colon left after the first inning against Tampa Bay on Wednesday with right elbow irritation. ... The Royals called up infielder Andres Blanco from Triple-A Omaha. He will take the roster spot of infielder Tony Graffanino, who was traded Tuesday to the Brewers. ... The Yankees acquired catcher Sal Fasano from the Phillies for minor league 2B Hector Made. Fasano, who had been designated for assignment by the Phillies on Saturday, was in the starting lineup Wednesday against Texas. ... Before Wednesday's win over the Red Sox, the A's optioned Tuesday's losing pitcher, RHP Jason Windsor, to Triple-A Sacramento following his second major league start. ... Yankees RF Gary Sheffield had the cast removed from his left wrist and can move to the next phase of his rehab.
