NBA Finals Notebook: 'Zo toasts to his first title

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

DALLAS -- Alonzo Mourning reached into a case of champagne in the middle of the Miami Heat locker room, pulled out a bottle and took a swig.

"It tastes fabulous," he said.

Championship bubbly almost always tastes good. It tastes even better when you haven't had a sip of alcohol in the nearly six years since a life-saving kidney transplant.

"My doctor told me I could have a drink in moderation," Mourning said following Miami's 95-92 victory over the Mavericks, making him and the Heat first-time champions. "To tell you the truth, I haven't had a drink since 2000, since I was diagnosed (with kidney disease). I gave it all up. I used to drink beers with my boys, but I haven't had a drink since then. My doctor would give me a doctor's note for the day."

Mourning was a big reason Miami won Tuesday, scoring eight points, grabbing six rebounds and blocking five shots in 14 minutes. He was often the most aggressive player on the floor, helping keep the Mavericks from driving the lane after doing so with ease when building a lead in the first half.

"Every second I was out there, I said, 'You know what? I'm going to leave every ounce of energy that I have,' " he said.
