Boeing continues to cut jobs, handing out 620 layoff notices
The Boeing Co. will hand out its first layoff notices of the new year today, warning 620 local workers to get a jump on their job searches or brace for unemployment.
After cutting roughly 30,000 jobs by the end of last year, Boeing is preparing to shed 5,000 more positions in 2003 through attrition and layoffs. Boeing is giving 60-day warnings to workers today, and more workers are scheduled to lose their jobs next Friday.
Boeing is trimming its payroll because U.S. airlines continue to struggle as demand for air travel remains depressed in response to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. US Airways and United Airlines are already in bankruptcy. Since Sept. 11, 2001, Boeing has notified 31,040 of its workers to prepare for layoff, while actually cutting 30,000 positions, 18,550 of them around the Puget Sound area. The company warned 30 workers outside the Seattle area, along with the 620 local employees.
Boeing will hit its salaried staffers harder this month, warning 380 salaried employees, compared with 240 hourly Machinists. The workers are scheduled to lose their jobs March 21.
A warning doesn't necessarily mean an employee will lose his or her job. For example, the company handed notices to 1,200 workers in October, but laid off just about 800 workers two months later.
