Teamsters may seek release of negotiators

The Teamsters union raised the stakes yesterday in its talks with Airborne Inc.'s ABX Air over a contract for more than 800 flight crews, indicating it may ask federal mediators to release its negotiators from the talks. A release would spark a 30-day "cooling-off" period, and then the union could call a strike or other disruption, Teamsters Local 1224 said.

UAW ratifies 5-year contract with Peterbilt

Paccar Inc.'s Peterbilt and the United Auto Workers union ended a 10-month dispute over the weekend when workers ratified a new five-year contract. The vote, 417 to 96, ended a lockout of 750 workers at Peterbilt's Tennessee plant, though only 250 workers will resume work thanks to a slowdown in the industry, according to the union.

The shutdown of West Coast ports last year may be boosting business, the port said, because shippers are now looking to move goods through a wider range of ports.
