640 more local Boeing workers to get pink slips
The Boeing Co. will take another step today in its effort to trim as many as 40,000 jobs from its payroll, laying off 640 more local workers.
The latest batch of pink slips will bring the total number of jobs cut at Boeing since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks to 34,650, with 22,367 around the Puget Sound area, according to Boeing spokesman Peter Conte. Boeing will lay off 120 other workers outside Western Washington today.
In the Seattle-area, 255 local hourly workers will lose their jobs, and 385 salaried staffers will become jobless.
Layoffs also will remain a monthly ritual at Boeing plants for the near future. Just as Boeing neared its target of 35,000 jobs cuts last week, the Chicago-based company announced plans to trim 4,000 to 5,000 more positions.
Executives cited the continuing weakness among U.S. carriers as a key reason that thousands of additional workers will lose their jobs.
Wednesday, the company cut its earnings outlook for next year, while paring its 2004 order forecast slightly, all while reporting a $192 million loss for the second quarter.
