Boeing picks Eutelsat for in-flight Net service
The Boeing Co. has chosen Eutelsat SA to provide satellite capacity to power in-flight high-speed Internet connections.
The agreement, for which terms weren't disclosed, will allow Boeing to "accelerate the broad deployment" of technology that will let travelers use laptop computers or hand-held devices to access the Internet, their company intranets and other services.
Boeing and airline operators are tapping into the spreading popularity of wireless fidelity technology, or Wi-Fi, which lets users access the Internet without wires within a limited area.
People are increasingly expecting to be able to tap into the Web from train stations, hotel rooms and even the sky.
Paris-based Eutelsat has been working with the Connexion by Boeing unit for three months to test the service on trans-Atlantic and European flights with Deutsche Lufthansa AG, and British Airways Plc.
Boeing already offers high-speed Internet access to operators of private business jets in the United States. It recently signed contracts with Lufthansa and Scandinavian Airlines System AB to equip their long-haul fleets starting in 2004, it said.
Japan Airlines has also announced its intention to install the Connexion by Boeing service on its long-haul carriers, Boeing said.
