All Nippon to more than double charters to recover from SARS

By MASUMI SUGA
BLOOMBERG NEWS

All Nippon Airways Co. will more than double chartered flights in its fiscal second half, to help it recover from the aftermath of the SARS outbreak that forced travelers to cancel trips.

The airline will offer 40 international chartered flights and 105 domestic ones in the six months through March 31, 2004, the company said in a statement distributed through the Land, Infrastructure and Transport Ministry.

That compares with 63 international and domestic chartered flights a year ago.

The carrier, which wants to attract tourist traffic, is offering more chartered flights to Honolulu, Hawaii, from Japan's regional airports, besides flights to destinations inside the country such as Hokkaido and Okinawa.

The airline is seeking to increase earnings from charters to help it overcome a slump earlier this year because of the outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome, which led passengers to scrap flight plans.

The flights to Honolulu will leave from the northern Japanese cities of Sapporo and Sendai, airports from which bigger rival Japan Airlines System Corp. plans to stop overseas flights.

The two are among the four regional airports from which Japan Airlines plans to stop flying to Honolulu starting in October.
