Sirius Satellite Radio to add channels, services
Sirius Satellite Radio Inc., the No. 2 U.S. pay-radio company, has created a technology to increase channel capacity by 25 percent and narrow the programming gap with larger competitor XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc.
The innovation, known as hierarchical modulation, will increase the current 120 channels and add video and data services, Sirius said yesterday in a statement. Sirius will offer services using the new system in the second half of 2006.
The technology may help Sirius compete with XM as both companies seek to add programs, boost subscribers and sign agreements with automakers to install their receivers. XM, with has 150 channels, signed an 11-year, $650 million deal in November to broadcast Major League Baseball games.
Talk-radio host Howard Stern agreed last year to join Sirius next January.
