Ex-Teamsters' site may go residential

By BRAD WONG
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER

Seattle residents who want an apartment with a close-up view of the Space Needle could get their wish in the near future.

The Teamsters union complex at 553 John St., just north of Denny Way, is slated to become a mixed-use project with 195 apartment units -- and only about 800 feet from the city's most famous landmark.

Construction on the $47.9 million project, now called the Denny Way Apartments, is expected to start next year, according to BRE Properties Inc., the San Francisco-based real estate company and owner.

In November, the Teamsters sold their 1.2 acres of land and two buildings, which date back to the 1930s and 1950s, for $8 million, according to property records filed with the King County Assessor.

They are moving to a 63,000-square-foot office building in Tukwila for more space.

Three union locals, 117, 174 and 763, owned the property and buildings, according to Joe Tessier, president of the Teamsters Building Association of Seattle.

Members include warehouse workers, truck drivers and office clerical staff.

A BRE Properties spokesman said his company is still in the planning stages for the project and would release more information later.

"They have a right to do what they want with it," Tessier said. "This area is hot for condo development, and that let us get top dollar for it."

The buildings, however, have served as the Seattle place where union members have held negotiations, planned boycotts, organized strikes and voted on thousands of contracts.

Dave Beck, a legendary Teamsters leader, used the property as a base from the 1930s through the 1950s -- before tax evasion landed him in jail in 1962.

"We are sad to be moving," Tessier said. "But everything has its time."
