Boeing finalizes 787 configuration
The Boeing Co. has reached an important milestone on the 787 program, freezing the design configuration of the Dreamliner.
"Firm configuration means the airplane's structural, propulsion and systems architectures are firm. They are not changing," said Mike Bair, vice president and general manager of the 787 program.
"This allows us and our partners to proceed with detailed design -- down to the smallest parts and final composite ply layouts -- with great confidence."
At the end of detailed design, Bair said, Boeing will know what "each inch of the airplane looks like and how it interacts with every other inch of the airplane."
Boeing is expected to begin production of the 787 in mid 2007. It would enter service with airlines about a year later.
The twin-engine 787 will be the world's first commercial jetliner with a composite wing and fuselage. It is being designed to be significantly more efficient than today's passenger jets -- a key sales draw for airlines hurt by rising fuel prices.
