Columbia Sportswear buys Montrail
Montrail Inc., the Seattle-based footwear manufacturer, has been bought by Columbia Sportswear Co. of Portland for $15 million and some debt assumption.
"Montrail started looking around for a strategic partner a year ago as a way of giving the brand a bigger stick to compete in the marketplace," said Scott Tucker, Montrail's former president, who will be general manager of the Montrail brand for Columbia.
Tucker said Montrail will continue to supply all of its customers, including REI, its largest client. Most of the high-end specialty shoemaker's customers are independents such as Seattle Running Co.
None of the current shoe lines will change, he said, noting that the strategic focus is still trail running, hiking, climbing and some casual wear.
Tucker said the company, founded in 1993, was not struggling before the sale, citing 15 percent annual growth, but he declined to give specific sales or earnings figures.
The company and its 25 employees will move to Portland within the year, he said. Former Chief Executive Menno van Wyk will be a consultant.
