GE aircraft-leasing unit orders up to 60 737s

P-I NEWS SERVICES

GE Commercial Aviation Services said Wednesday that it had placed a firm order for 30 of The Boeing Co.'s narrowbody 737 airplanes, with the option to buy 30 more.

The deal for all 60 airplanes would be worth $4 billion at list prices, although aircraft buyers typically get big discounts.

In a statement, Boeing said General Electric Co.'s aircraft leasing and financing unit will buy a mix of 737-800s and 737-900ERs. The 737-800 seats up to 189 passengers in a single-class configuration, whereas the 737-900ER, due to enter service early next year, will seat up to 215 people.

GE Commercial Aviation Services will take delivery of the 30 airplanes it has firm orders for between 2008 and 2010.

The company said it currently has more than 200 of the more modern next generation 737s in its fleet, which are being used by more than 30 airlines. The "next generation" moniker refers to Boeing 737-600s to -900s. Those models received a technology overhaul, a new flight deck and other improvements over previous models.

The contract brings the total number of 737s ordered by GE in the past two years to 68, and that may reach 98 should the additional options be exercised. GE Commercial Aviation leased all of the aircraft ordered last year, said Henry Hubschman, head of the Stamford, Conn.-based unit.

Chicago-based Boeing had more than 3,020 orders from 96 customers for the latest versions of the 737, the companies said.

The GE order includes stretched models of the aircraft, the 737-900ER, which seat more people than previous 737s.

GE makes the only engine available on the 787 through its venture with Safran SA of France, CFM International.
