Washington unemployment, job pool increased last month
Washington's unemployment rate rose one-tenth of a percentage point during September, to 5.3 percent, as more people sought work in an expanding job market.
That's down three-tenths of a percentage point from September 2005. The national rate was 4.6 percent, down one-tenth of a percentage point from August.
In figures released Tuesday morning, the state's Employment Security Department also said Washington employers added 4,100 new jobs in September. Health services led job growth, adding 1,800. Finance added 1,600 jobs, and construction added 1,500 jobs.
The labor force -- defined as those people with jobs plus those seeking jobs -- rose in September by three-tenths of a percentage point, while employment -- defined as the portion of the labor force with jobs -- grew by one-tenth of a percentage point from August.
All these numbers are seasonally adjusted, meaning they present the deviation from the expected figures, not absolute numbers.
