Cheap Eats: Kona Kitchen
Looking for a supercharged breakfast or good place to dine with small children? Say "aloha" and "mahalo" to Kona Kitchen in Seattle's quiet Maple Leaf neighborhood. It could be your answer. Ensconced in the former digs of King Ludvig's Tyrol, a Bavarian-style atmosphere lingers despite the addition of Hawaiian- and karate-theme movie posters and autographed headshots of actors -- famous and not. That's because Yuji Okomoto, a veteran of such films as "Karate Kid II," "Aloha Summer" and "American Yakuza," and his wife own and operate the restaurant.
The menu features American and Hawaiian fare. Breakfast, served until 4 p.m. daily, might be my favorite meal here. Excellent choices include Da Loco Moco ($5.95), a bowl filled with two scoops of rice topped with a charbroiled hamburger patty, fried egg and brown gravy; Pigs in a Blanket ($5.95), four link sausages wrapped in buttermilk pancakes; and Hawaiian Sweet Bread French Toast ($4.95).
Hawaiian-style plates, the traditional double-starch special featuring two scoops of rice and glorious macaroni salad, are the thing to order at lunch.
The night I ate dinner at Kona Kitchen, most parties included someone age 8 or younger. My accomplices (who include a 4-year-old) aren't sure exactly why, but note the kid-friendly menu -- burgers ($5.75-$6.95), chili frank ($7.25), fish and chips ($9.95) -- and the aforementioned post-Tyrol decor.
Kona Kitchen, 8501 Fifth Ave. N.E., 206-517-5662. Open 8 a.m.-9 p.m. daily.
