Cheap Eats: Pig Iron Bar-B-Q

With our aluminum plates licked clean of barbecue, my friends and I settled into the cozy back room of Pig Iron Bar-B-Q, content to let a round of $2.50 beers and Johnny Cash lull us into an even happier state.

It doesn't get better than this, I thought, even as it did -- because just then our waitress flashed a smile and set down a slice of sweet potato pecan pie ($3.50).

Owners Michael and Celeste Lucas seemed to have tapped into the soul of the finicky customer, balancing superb food with comfy digs.

Every detail has been thoughtfully conceived, from mason jars that hold freshly squeezed pink limeade to the cast iron skillets bearing crispy, perfectly seasoned sweet potato fries to the large wooden cowboy mural dominating the back room.

Michael Lucas ditched a long career as a chef in fine dining joints, and even moved to Texas 10 years ago "just to get the real deal on BBQ."

The slices of brisket are tender and generous, and by far the best deal on the menu. Chose the meats in sandwiches, with either potato salad or crispy cole slaw ($6.75). Or take it like a real cowboy, on a platter with

your choice of two sides

($9.75 to $13.75).

You can make a meal of four side dishes, and it's every bit as hearty ($8.75). Along with the brisket, the creamy jalapeño spinach casserole ($2.75) and cornbread dressing ($2.25) will keep me coming back here.
