Cheap Eats: El Diablo Coffee Co.
At El Diablo Coffee Co., painted flames blaze up from the floor. Devils frolic in coffee cups on one ochre-colored wall while bluebirds and cupids swoop around a nook named the "Love Grotto." The bold designs decorate vibrantly painted tables.
Let's start with coffee and dessert -- I mean, who wanders into a cafe harkening of Hades intending to be dietarily chaste?
The cortadito -- a double-shot of espresso, caramelized sugar and a dollop of foamed milk -- is so naughtily rich it could send you into a frenzy of Hail Mary's ($2). Mexican Ibarra chocolate flavors the silky hot cocoa that has hints of cinnamon. Or indulge in a slice of milk-soaked, slightly coconuty tres leches cake ($4).
There are also traditional espresso drinks made from beans roasted Cuban-style -- a hotter, quicker roasting that's supposed to result in a less bitter brew.
For substance, try the pork or veggie Cuban sandwiches. The former is heaped with smoky shredded pork, ham, cheese, pickles, tomato and mustard. The veggie variety swaps the meat for a zippy mix of marinated peppers and artichoke. The sandwiches are toasted in a press that crisps the bread and warms the inside (served with chips $7).
The limited menu also has a tropical fruit salad with kiwi, strawberries and blueberries ($4), changing soup specials and mango salsa with chips.
El Diablo Coffee Co., 1811 Queen Anne Ave. N.; 206-285-0693. Hours: 5:30 a.m. to midnight daily.
