Ask the Critic: Sunday brunch suggestions

Q: I have been looking for a place that serves a nice Sunday brunch. I moved here from Southern California, where a lot of the hotels and resorts serve a Sunday brunch. Do you have any places in the Seattle area you would recommend?

-- T.R.

A: Probably the closest classic Sunday brunch in town is the buffet served at Salty's on Alki, 1936 Harbor Ave. S.W. For $32.95 you get an all-you-can-eat spread of Dungeness crab and other seafood, plus all the usual eggs/waffle/fruit choices. The view is worth the premium price, and reservations are highly recommended (206-937-1600).

We have heard good reports about Sunday brunch at the classy Georgian in the Fairmont Olympic Hotel (411 University St.). A la carte items include the Micro Brew Pancakes With Lavender Syrup and Sweet Butter ($15) and Ultimate Granola With Banana Brulee and Lemon Yogurt ($8), but there's also a $19.50 continental buffet including pastries, fruit, yogurt, granola and more. I'm a creature of habit, so I'm likely to find myself at the a la carte Cafe Flora (2901 E. Madison St.), where I enjoy the $10.50 breakfast quesadilla served with "snappy sauce" and a side salad. I also like the heaping platters of classic eggs and toast and stuff at the Maltby Cafe (8809 Maltby Road, Snohomish) and the slightly more dressed-up plates at Geraldine's Counter (4872 Rainier Ave. S.). For a less common treat, chestnut pancakes ($7.95) at Volterra, 5411 Ballard Ave. N.W., also are worth a trip.
