Cheap Eats: A New York Pizza Place

Friday, December 28, 2001

You might remember the thin, chewy crusts of A New York Pizza Place pies when they were served piping hot from Todd Peltz's downtown digs. Almost a year ago Peltz took his show uptown to "a funky little joint" in North Seattle. What a boon for Seattle's northern 'burb.

Choose a pizza combo or dress up the cheese pizza with your own mix of toppings ($12 for the 18-inch pizza unadorned). When your dinner party's taste buds are battling like the Mets vs. the Yankees, there's no need to compromise -- just customize your own slice for $2, plus 35 to 50 cents for each added topping.

Among the combos, the Mickey Mantle pizza's a hit with slices of sausage from local favorite the Cascioppo Bros., pepperoni, olives and red onion ($17).

On the popular meatball sandwich, homemade meatballs swoon in a ketchupy marinara sauce with mozzarella and Parmesan melted on top ($6.50).

The house salad is big enough to share and comes decked out with Kalamata olives, roasted red pepper and Parmesan ($4.50). Don't for a minute attribute the delightful, surprising little crunch in the salad to bacon bits -- credit goes to toasted garlic. All the flavors frolic together in the sweet homemade Italian dressing.

There's beer and the wines are cheap and drinkable.

A New York Pizza Place, 8310 Fifth Ave. N.E.; 206-524-1355. Open 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday, 11 a.m-10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 4-8 p.m. Sunday.
