Cheap Eats: 611 Supreme Creperie & Cafe

Friday, March 1, 2002

The Goldilocks version of Sunday brunch -- not too small, not too big, not too hot, not too cold, but just right -- is served up in delicious form at the 611 Supreme Creperie & Cafe.

The red-brick interior of the little Capitol Hill storefront has a dozen tables and a cook wielding crepe pans. The results are nicely spiced and sized -- not overstuffed like those of some breakfast joints -- filled with enough cheese to add flavor but not so much that they are gooey or greasy.

The pomme de terre ($6.50) was classy perfection even down to the salt-and-pepper seasoning, with sliced red potatoes sauteed with scallions and garlic and sharp Parmesan cheese. "Le Jardin" ($6.50) featured Gruyere cheese and sauteed vegetables, including a layer of spinach cooked perfectly. .

We thought twice about ordering a fresh fruit dessert in February, and we should have thought yet again: The fruit crepe ($4.75) was little more than decorative with its star fruit, persimmon, pear and grapes. Wildly better was the light, crisp-edged citron crepe ($3.25), a tart-sweet delight wet with lemon juice, sugar and a dab of creme fraiche, topped with curls of zest.

Build your own meal by ordering a plain crepe ($2.75) and adding toppings.

There's no drip coffee, but french press is available at $1.75.

611 Supreme Creperie & Cafe, 611 E. Pine St., 206-328-0292 . Open 5-11 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday, 5 p.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday. Brunch served 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
