It isn't the same, of course. There's no homey wooden bear at the front door; no scramble for the cozy, crowded seats.
But it still does the soul good to know some version of the Honey Bear Bakery lived on beyond last year's closure of its Ravenna flagship store. This one is in the Lake Forest Park Towne Centre, whose mall food court is warmed up by Third Place Books, which shares the space.
Honey Bear sandwiches are thick and hearty, served on slabs of homemade bread. Try the cashew chicken salad ($6.25), enlivened with scallions and cilantro and such, or the roasted turkey ($6.25). Even adults will relish an occasional comforting peanut butter sandwich with marionberry jam ($3.75). Daily soups ($2.75 cup or $3.75 bowl) also are featured; I could have made a meal out of the creamy red pepper soup with a warm wheaty roll.
We were disappointed in our one visit for Sunday brunch (in the back of the room, with tablecloths and table service), with surprisingly limp home fries and uninspired scrambles. Next time we'll just select pastries from the main counter, such as a fresh blueberry muffin ($1.60) or orange-pecan twist ($2.25), or enjoy the towering, cream-filled layer cakes that were an old Honey Bear signature dish.
Honey Bear Bakery, 17171 Bothell Way N.E., Lake Forest Park; 206-366-3330. Open 8 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday-Thursday; 8 a.m.-11 p.m. Friday and Saturday; 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Sunday.
