Cheap Eats: Nana's Soup House

You don't need a rainy-day excuse to duck into the warm interior at Nana's Soup House north of University Village.

Even on a bright toasty weekend, Nana's is packed with locals who've really found a good thing --luscious, original-tasting soups served with good cheer in a funky, fun environment.

Panini sandwiches and salads are available, but hot and homemade soups are definitely the way to go. Eight soups change daily, and vegans, vegetarians and carnivores will find several excellent choices.

The sweet corn chowder was a flavorful blend of corn, celery, carrots and roasted red peppers: creamy yet no one ingredient overwhelms the other. The country mushroom and sour cream was another favorite, and even the odd-sounding hamburger cabbage soup was worth a try.

Bowls of soup are $4.75, cups $3.45. Each come with a thick slice of rustic potato bread or a sweet corn muffin. Choose also from generous salads ($3.95 for a side) and soup-and-panini combos ($4.50).

Jazz on Thursday nights and Caffe Vita espresso makes the cafe a lively hangout at night.

Nana's Soup House, 3418 N.E. 55th St.; 206-523-9053. Open for lunch and dinner 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
