Cheap Eats: Wibbley's Gourmet Hamburgers
Friday, August 23, 2002
Despite the goofy, childlike name, Wibbley's Gourmet Hamburgers is not your average clown-themed burger joint. This eatery, tucked into a Bellevue strip mall, is steakhouse in decor, with forest green wainscoting and dark wood stools and tables. The walls are adorned with pen-and-ink drawings of horses and images of airplanes and ships in a style apropos of a staid, book-filled den.
And Wibbley's char-broiled burgers are better than standard fast food, too. The burgers are not overly greasy and come with plenty of fresh veggie fixings. The mushroom burger is a favorite, piled high with sauteed 'shrooms ($3.99). The bacon cheeseburger is also a hit, but the teriyaki burger regrettably lacks a pineapple ring. The chicken burger is a juicy breast, perfectly cooked ($4.29).
At first glance, vegetarians appear doomed to a burger that's actually just a bun with lettuce, tomato and condiments ($2.49), but an easily overlooked note on the cash register states that a garden burger patty can be substituted for beef on any of the burgers for an extra 50 cents. That's the better bet -- the veggie patty has a nice texture and is speckled with carrots and mushrooms.
The fries -- thick as your pinky finger and steaming hot -- are a cut above as well (89 cents for a small order).
Wibbley's Gourmet Hamburgers, 2255 140th Ave. N.E., Suite B, Bellevue, 425-747-7818, Open 11 a.m.- to 8 p.m. Monday-Friday, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday.
