50 eateries serve up their best at Center

The Bite is back, kicking off three days of eating and entertainment today at the Seattle Center.

Now in its 18th year, the Bite of Seattle adds some new twists for 1999 and reprises many of its previous attractions. As usual, it will offer a smorgasbord of snacking, with 50 restaurant food booths peddling everything from pizza to piroshky. Music on stage will range from acid rock to a cappella.

Admission and performances are free, but food isn't: Featured eats are priced up to $5 a serving, with combination plates up to $5.50; each booth offers a $2 taste as well.

New to this year's Bite is the Koala Cafe and Piano Bar, featuring local pianist Michael Grey. Visitors to the cafe can sit and listen while sampling food from Milt's BBQ, Gyros World and Royal Thai restaurants, whose booths are nearby. Or they can stroll into the adjacent Wine of Seattle exhibit, another new feature, and taste wines bottled under the Covey Run and Alice Springs labels. For $5, visitors 21 and over can taste three wines (and keep their souvenir glasses); additional tastes are $1 each.

The Mardi Gras Courtyard entertainment center also makes its debut this year, looking to capture a bit of New Orleans spirit for festivalgoers 21 and over. Bourbon, beads and jazz highlight the action, along with comedy acts on stage. A variety of games and contests will offer prizes from a distillery, a cruise line and a radio station. On the menu: Creole and Cajun food.

Absent from the event is Hinterberger's Alley, which in past years showcased food samples from 10 top area restaurants, as selected by restaurant critic John Hinterberger. Hinterberger's retirement at the end of 1998 signaled the end of that attraction.

That leaves Under the Toque as the Bite's principal upscale dining venue. Inaugurated at last year's festival, it brings together five leading chefs from Seattle area restaurants to prepare samples of their cooking for festival attendees. Each chef will prepare a featured item and a $2 taste.

Chefs participating in Under the Toque this year are:

  • Geogy Chacko, Chutneys Bistro. Trained in India, Chacko marshals the complex seasonings of Indian cuisine against a Pacific Northwest backdrop as executive chef of three Chutneys Bistros in Seattle. His featured item as the Bite will be a broiled ginger pesto masala fish with tropical relish accompanied by saffron basmati vegetable rice pilaf. His $2 taste will be tandoori chicken leg with vegetable rice and herb naan.

  • Don Curtiss Assaggio Ristorante. Curtiss, who blends Italian, French, Spanish and Mediterranean influences in his cooking, worked at Al Boccalino and Andaluca in Seattle before joining Assaggio. He will prepare fusilli pasta tossed with sausage, currants, pinenuts, arugula, saffron, cream and pecorino romano cheese as his featured item, with a fruit sorbet as his $2 taste.

  • Emily Moore, Europa West. Moore is returning to the local restaurant scene at Europa West, which opened this month in Kirkland, after previous stints at The Painted Table and Theoz in Seattle. As an example of her inventive cooking, she will prepare a rotisserie-roasted brine-cured pork loin stuffed with spinach, apricots, prosciutto and walnuts, served with a two-pepper jus and roasted new potatoes. A smaller portion will make up the $2 taste.

  • Alex Nemeth, Bandoleone. Nemeth, former sous-chef at Brie & Bordeaux, now cooks to a Latin beat at Bandoleone in Seattle. His featured entree will be a cinammon- and chili-marinated grilled pork loin, served with pozole and sweet ancho chili catsup. His $2 taste will be a ceviche of rock shrimp with habanero chilies and coconut, tossed with cucumber, jicama and caramelized pineapple and served with corn chips.

  • Wolfgang Puck, The Wolfgang Puck Cafe. One of America's top celebrity chefs, Puck comes to the Bite from Southern California, where he built a restaurant empire centered on Spago in West Hollywood and now extending across the country; with the recent closing of ObaChine, his remaining local outpost is the Seattle incarnation of his namesake cafe. Puck will prepare New Zealand lamb chops with stir-fried vegetables, cilantro and aioli. His $2 taste will be a chocolate truffle cake with whipped cream.

    The Bite begins at 11 a.m. today with a zany race through an obstacle course by the Seattle Center fountain, with prizes for top finishers.

    Another fun event is the "Eat the Heat Challenge," in which contestants race to gobble five chicken wings smeared with hot sauce of increasing levels of intensity. $5 entry fee. Winners receive prizes from Argosy Cruises. "Heats" will take place near the Exhibition Hall at 1, 3, 5 and 7 p.m. today and Sunday and at 1, 3, 6 and 8 p.m. tomorrow.

    Seattle Center Monorail

    Park at the Bon Marché garage on Third and Stewart and take the monorail. Special parking rates are $5 today and tomorrow and $4 Sunday; present the garage attendant with a monorail ticket stub to receive the discount.

    The downtown monorail station is located on the third floor of Westlake Center, with entrances from the mall or from the stairway at Fifth Avenue and Pine Street.

    A special shuttle service, with up to 10 round trips per hour, will be operated during the Bite. Hours are 9 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. each day.

    One-way fares are $1.25 for adults and 50 cents for youths between the ages of 5-12, 50 cents for seniors and disabled, and free for children 4 and under. For more information, call 206-411-6038.

    Metro downtown shuttle

    Riders may catch the Metro shuttle bus downtown at Second Avenue and Madison Street, and at the Seattle Center at Second Avenue and Mercer Street. The shuttle makes all regular stops northbound on First Avenue until Denny Way and southbound on Fifth Avenue North between Mercer and Republican streets, then by request along Cedar Street and Second Avenue. It will operate from 10:10 a.m. to 11:04 p.m. tomorrow and Sunday.

    One-way fare is $1 and an all-day pass is $2.

    Metro Northgate shuttle

    Metro will operate a shuttle tomorrow and Sunday between the Northgate Park & Ride, at N.E. 112th Street and Fifth Avenue N.E., and Seattle Center, with the stop in front of the Intiman Playhouse on Mercer Street. The shuttle from Northgate will run every 15 minutes from 9:57 a.m. to 7 p.m. and every 30 minutes from 7 p.m. to 10:27 p.m. It will operate from Seattle Center every 15 minutes from 10:40 a.m. until 7:40 p.m. and every 30 minutes from 7 p.m. to 11:10 p.m.

    The shuttle makes inbound stops at Northgate Park & Ride and Northgate Transit Center, and on Aurora at 105th, 85th and 46th. The outbound shuttle makes all requested stops.

    One-way fare $1 and an all-day pass is $2.

    Metro bus routes

    Metro provides regular bus service to the Seattle Center on 11 routes: 2, 3, 4, 8, 13, 15, 16, 18, 19, 24 and 33.

    Parking

    Carpool rates are in effect today through Sunday at all parking facilities operated by the Seattle Center, which are identified by the Seattle Center logo. Rates are $8 (for three or more occupants), $10 (two occupants) and $11 (one occupant).

    Disabled parking is available at all lots. If a lot appears to be full, ask an attendant for disabled access.

    Seattle Center offers a parking, traffic and transportation hot line at 206-233-3989.

    Alternate routes

    Besides the major routes to the Seattle Center via the Mercer Street or Stewart Street exits from I-5, consider using Highway 99, Denny Way or Elliott Avenue.
