Seahawks Notebook: Holliday time for Hawks' 'D'?

By CLARE FARNSWORTH
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER

KIRKLAND -- When Vonnie Holliday visited the Seahawks two weeks ago, the free-agent defensive end from the Green Bay Packers didn't -- no, couldn't -- hide his enthusiasm about continuing his career in Seattle.

Today, those emotions will be tested when his agent expects to re-open discussions with the Seahawks, who lost their preferred option Saturday when Philadelphia Eagle free agent Hugh Douglas signed a five-year, $27 million contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

"Vonnie definitely does want to play out that way," Brian Levy, Holliday's agent, said yesterday. "He has a good comfort level with the coaches and the direction the team is headed."

Holliday, four years younger than Douglas, was the Packers' first-round draft choice in 1998, Mike Holmgren's last season as Green Bay's coach before coming to Seattle. Holliday also played a season in Green Bay under Ray Rhodes, the new Seahawks defensive coordinator.

Holliday was delaying signing with a new team until Douglas had made his choice. Now, he goes from the one being put off to the one being pursued.

Holliday could be the final option at defensive end in free agency for the Seahawks. They are not interested in San Francisco 49ers unrestricted free agent Chike Okeafor and would not be willing to part with their first-round draft choice (11th overall) as compensation for signing Green Bay restricted free agent Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila to an offer sheet the Packers would not match.

NO DEAL FOR D.J.: Darrell Jackson, a restricted free agent, is not planning to pass on the rest of the restricted free agency period and sign his tender with the Seahawks, contrary to newspaper and radio reports over the weekend.

"No, that is not true," Brian Mooney, Jackson's agent said yesterday. "That makes no sense. I have no clue where that came from."

Jackson visited the New York Jets last week and left without signing an offer sheet. Because the Seahawks tendered him at first-round compensation (a $1.318 million offer), they have the right to match any offer Jackson might sign or accept the team's first-round draft choice as compensation.

The signing period for restricted free agents ends April 18.

HAWK TALK: Middle linebacker Charlie Clemons, an unrestricted free agent from the Saints, is scheduled to visit the Seahawks tomorrow. He already has visited the Packers and Detroit Lions.
