Good news on Alexander: Knee injury is a bone bruise

By CLARE FARNSWORTH
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER

KIRKLAND -- The news on Shaun Alexander's injured right knee was better than expected Monday, when a magnetic resonance imaging test showed no structural damage.

The doctors are calling it a bone bruise, which occurred when the Seahawks' leading rusher twisted his knee in the turf at the Superdome late in the fourth quarter of Sunday's 21-7 victory over the New Orleans Saints.

"I think he's OK, thank goodness," coach Mike Holmgren said during his weekly news conference. "Shaun might miss a week or two, but there's also the chance he could play this week."

The official word is that Alexander is day-to-day as the Seahawks begin preparing for this week's game against the Buccaneers in Tampa.

If Alexander can't play, third-year back Maurice Morris will start, with second-year back Kerry Carter filling Morris' reserve role.

Alexander scored each of the Seahawks touchdowns while rushing for 135 yards and catching two passes for 31 yards in the season opener.
