Get Out: Best Bets
Naturalist Hike to Lake Serene: The Mountaineers lead this moderately strenuous 8-mile hike with 2,000-foot elevation gain to a beautiful lake reflecting the impressive walls of Mount Index. Side trip to Bridal Veil Falls and fall colors. Meet at Brickyard park and ride, Exit 22 off I-405, 8:30 a.m. Call for prerequisites. Guests welcome but must sign up with club in advance. Green Mountain hike: The Central Puget Sound Chapter of the Washington Native Plant Society hosts this tough 8-mile (round-trip) hike with 3,000-foot elevation gain to splendid fall colors and great views on Green Mountain, east of Darrington. Meet at 7 a.m. at Ravenna park and ride, Northeast 65th Street and Ravenna Boulevard Northeast. Northwest Forest Pass needed for parking at the trailhead. Reservations: Richard Droker, 206-782-5767. Scary Spooky Halloween Tunnel Ride: Join the Backcountry Bicycle Trails Club for this socially paced, technically easy 6- to 8-mile ride on the old railroad grade through the Snoqualmie Tunnel, east to west. This is a family ride. Bring a jacket, a bite to eat and bike light. Costumes welcome. Meet at Iron Horse State Park's Keechelus Trailhead on Snoqualmie Pass off the Hyak exit, 5 p.m. Helmets are mandatory on all BBTC-led rides. Information: 206-524-2900, www.bbtc.org.
