Bike exhibits will be in high gear at this weekend's expo

P-I STAFF

All things bicycle -- new bikes, vintage bikes, gear, clubs, cycling experts and stunt teams -- will be jammed into Hangar 27 at Magnuson Park Saturday and Sunday for the 18th Seattle International Bicycle Expo.

Sponsored by Group Health and produced by the 6,000-member Cascade Bicycle Club, the expo is considered one of the largest annual celebrations of cycling in the country. It will feature more than 150 exhibits of bikes, shops, accessories, clubs, travel opportunities, health and fitness.

About 10,000 wheel-spinners are expected to show up, and they'll be able to take in two vintage bike displays (fat tire and classic), ride in a test area, watch the Northwest BMX stunt team and listen to a host of cycling celebrities.

These include Irish legend Sean Kelly, winner of 193 international races; Davis Phinney, the first American to win a Tour de France stage; Danskin Triathlon pioneer Sally Edwards; and Sister Madonna Buder, an Ironman record holder and at 74 still doing triathlons.

The expo also will feature a Youth Zone offering free training and entertainment.

The Expo Gala, Saturday evening from 7:30 to 10:30, is a fund-raising event to support the Cascade Bicycle Club and its mission to create a better community through cycling. Tickets for the gala are $20 at the door, or $18 in advance via www.brownpapertickets.com

Admission to the Expo proper is $8, with kids 15 and younger free. Hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. For details, see www.cascade.org/
