Huskies offensive guard opts for culinary school
Embroiled in four-man battle for starting spot, Butler lost desire to play

By TED MILLER
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER

Washington's offensive line depth has taken a significant hit.

Junior Aaron Butler, who started 13 games at weakside offensive guard for the Huskies, has left the team, a UW spokesperson confirmed.

Butler apparently lost his desire to play and wants to enter a culinary arts school.

Butler was unavailable for comment. Offensive coordinator Keith Gilbertson, who has been assigned supervisory duties over the team until suspended head coach Rick Neuheisel's appeal of his termination is resolved, didn't return a message requesting comment.

Butler, a 6-foot-4, 320-pound native of Lakewood, started 12 of 13 games last year, missing only the Arizona State contest due to injury.

The former Lakes High School standout fell behind sophomore Tusi Sa'au on the depth chart during spring practices, and the preseason battle at guard was expected to be heated between Butler, Sa'au, junior Dan Dicks and sophomore Robin Meadow.

Sa'au is the only member of that foursome who hasn't started a game.

Butler, one of four returning starters on the line, started his first game as a redshirt freshman against then-10th-ranked Washington State and earned the coaches' award for offensive MVP in the Huskies' 25-14 upset victory.

His brother, Hillary, was a member of the 1991 co-national championship team.

THIS WEEK

UW athletic director Barbara Hedges will rule on coach Rick Neuheisel's appeal of his firing, possibly as soon as today.
