How To ... start sewing

For a while there, it looked as if sewing was a dying art. Remember Molly Ringwald in "Pretty in Pink," teased by the blue bloods for her hand-sewn clothes?

But alas, things have changed, and sewing is enjoying a rebirth, thanks to Martha Stewart and "Project Runway." Want to get started? Here are some tips:

  • Sign up for an introductory sewing class, offered online at numerous Web sites including sewing.patternreview.com, sensibility.com/classes.htm or patternsthatfityou.com.

  • Start with an easy project, such as sewing a skirt or a pillow.

  • Don't buy an expensive sewing machine before knowing anything about sewing.

  • Don't use a "practice" fabric you dislike. You'll be more enthusiastic about learning if you're making something in a fabric you love. Don't worry about making a mistake.

  • Realize sewing takes technical know-how, not just creativity.
