Free Time: Low- and no-cost events and activities

VOLUNTEER: Bring hope, compassion and choices to residents in nursing homes, assisted-living facilities and adult family homes. The long-term care ombudsman program seeks volunteers to visit and advocate for residents. SIT AND KNIT: Share the healing power of knitting. Make chemo caps for those with hair loss and afghans for cancer treatment areas, Wednesdays and Fridays, 10 a.m.-1 p.m., at Overlake Community Health Center, 1035 116th Ave., Bellevue. Information: 425-688-5986.

GOODWILL DONATION CENTER: Seattle Goodwill has an attended donation center at the Bear Creek park and ride, 7760 178th Place N.E., Redmond. The center is open daily, 7:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Goodwill collects donations of new and used items such as clothing, shoes, books, toys and housewares. Call 206-329-1000 for information. SANTA NIGHT: On Dec. 10 at 5:30 p.m., Santa will make a special trip down the chimney at the Covington Library, 27100 164th Ave. S.E. Parents are invited to bring a camera and capture the moment or let Santa's helpers take a photo for you. A donation of $3 goes to the Friends of the Covington Library.

PEACE GATHERING: Sound Non-violent Opponents of War, a coalition of religious groups and individuals committed to using non-violent means to oppose war, is hosting a gathering to prevent war on Iraq, Dec. 8, 1-4:30 p.m., at Garfield High School, 400 23rd Ave. (at East Jefferson St.). Featured speakers are the Rev. Rich Gamble, who recently visited Iraq; Rita Zawaideh, of the Arab American Community Coalition; and Dustin Washington, of American Friends Service Committee. Participants will break into small groups, organized by neighborhoods or other interests, to plan practical strategies to prevent a war against Iraq. Information: 206-789-5565.
