Seven arraigned for role in tax-shelter scheme

SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER STAFF

Seven people were arraigned in federal court Thursday on charges of abetting an international tax-shelter scheme.

All but two of the defendants pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy, wire fraud, mail fraud and filing false tax returns through a multinational company called Anderson's Ark & Associates. Arraignments were delayed two weeks for company founder Keith Anderson, 61, formerly of Hoodsport, and his brother, Wayne Anderson, 63.

Defendant Karolyn Grosnickle, 60, of Hoodsport -- already serving a sentence of two years and two months for helping an undercover IRS agent hide $60,000 through the company -- also appeared before U.S. Magistrate Monica Benton.

In one scheme, the defendants helped about 260 people take $120 million in false income tax deductions from 1997 to 2001, according to the Internal Revenue Service.

Three other defendants who were also indicted last month have yet to be arraigned.
