New initiative could help Snohomish fund anti-smoking efforts
New funds from a voter-approved initiative could help the Snohomish Health District snuff out more cigarettes in the county.
The Washington State Department of Health gave two grants to the district totaling $135,000. The money is targeted at reducing tobacco use, as well as residents' exposure to second-hand tobacco smoke.
Part of the money, $60,020, will be used for smoking-intervention training and prevention work for the Tulalip and Stillaguamish tribes. Another $74,628 is marked for developing a marketing plan to reduce exposure to second-hand smoke. This includes a poster contest for schoolchildren. The winning entry will be made into a billboard.
