A clear signal from Seattle police: You jaywalk, you pay
As Seattle police officers wrote jaywalking tickets in the background, Jason Cossette displayed his $42 citation while warning other pedestrians not to cross the street illegally. Cossette and his girlfriend were both cited for failing to obey a signal.

| "It's insane, at Second and Pike you have all the dope dealers ... and they're busting jaywalkers," said Jason Cossette. | ||
A "zero tolerance" crime drive, focused on the Pike Place Market, began yesterday with the deployment of an undisclosed number of officers.
They could be seen at midday, handing out citations to pedestrians who were jaywalking or ignoring the crosswalk signals. About a dozen jaywalking citations were handed out within two hours, at locations between First and Fourth avenues and Stewart and Pine streets. Police did not release any figures on arrests or citations.
Spokeswoman Deanna Nollette said the "emphasis" patrols downtown were started because crime appeared to be on the rise and residents were complaining. With summer approaching and tourists beginning to crowd the market, the Police Department wants people in the area to feel safe.
She would not say how long the drive will last.
