Tree stealer sentenced to 7 1/2 years
An Aberdeen man convicted of stealing three old-growth cedar trees received a 90-month prison sentence yesterday.
Daniel Hughes, 38, was found guilty in April of cutting down old-growth trees in Olympic National Forest and selling them.
In a sentencing hearing yesterday in Montesano, Grays Harbor County Superior Court Judge Gordon Godfrey agreed with prosecutors that the Aberdeen man, who has prior felony convictions for cedar-stealing as well as possession and use of methamphetamine, deserved an exceptional sentence beyond the standard range of three to nine months.
Hughes' attorney, John Farra of Ocean Shores, said he will appeal the case.
"Mr. Hughes didn't deserve 90 months," Farra said.
