Work begins on new Rainier Vista
Construction started yesterday on the new Rainier Vista housing complex, also home to a new building for the Providence ElderPlace medical program for low-income seniors.
The controversial 1,010-unit, mixed-income redevelopment in Seattle's Rainier Valley replaces 481 units of World War II-era public housing.
The project was delayed by a lawsuit seeking to have every low-income housing unit in the old development replaced in the new Rainier Vista. The advocates who brought the suit were concerned that the new housing project would displace poor tenants in favor of people with higher incomes.
Demolition of the old Rainier Vista began in late 2002 after the Seattle Housing Authority agreed to a settlement that included replacing all but 71 of the original 481 units on-site, with the balance being replaced elsewhere.
The redevelopment is supported by a $35 million federal HOPE VI grant.
The new Rainier Vista will include a neighborhood house for the Head Start preschool program, classrooms, social services and community space as well as the new Providence ElderPlace building.
Providence ElderPlace is a program that helps keep seniors out of nursing homes by providing a range of medical and support services, including primary medical care, transportation, physical therapy and social activities.
The new building, supported by a $350,000 matching grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, will expand the program's space by 50 percent to 12,000 square feet and will allow Providence ElderPlace to approximately double the number of participants.
