State Department to fund salmon commission
WASHINGTON -- The State Department has agreed to spend $600,000 from other accounts to help keep the Pacific Salmon Commission afloat until money becomes available in the new fiscal year, a spokesman said yesterday.
The decision must be approved by Congress.
The Vancouver, B.C.-based commission manages fishing of endangered salmon in the United States and Canada.
It is in danger of closing because Congress has refused to fund the U.S. share of its budget, more than $1 million.
