Washington man charged with driving off-road near geyser

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. -- A Vancouver, Wash., man is free on bail after being arrested on charges that he drove his pickup truck off-road, spun "doughnuts" near a geyser and eventually got stuck.

Authorities say Adam E. Elford, 22, was cited for driving off-road in the park, damaging park resources, having a loaded gun in his truck, improper food storage and driving with a suspended license.

He is expected to appear in U.S. District Court at a later date.

Park Service officials said the incident occurred Oct. 10, but they did not release details until this week.

They allege Elford drove his pickup around a locked barrier and, with an unidentified companion, drove along a path reserved for pedestrians and bicyclists. They went through a second barrier and drove on fragile soil surrounding the Lone Star Geyser, authorities said.
