Ruderman to run for secretary of state

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

KIRKLAND -- State Rep. Laura Ruderman, a former Microsoft Corp. executive who won election three times as a Democrat in a Republican district, announced her bid yesterday for secretary of state.

The Kirkland lawmaker, vice chairwoman of the House Democratic caucus, will give up her 45th District seat to challenge first-term Republican Sam Reed in the 2004 election. Her third House term ends in January 2005.

Republican state Chairman Chris Vance called her decision great news for the GOP.

"Sam Reed will crush Laura Ruderman, and we'll get her seat back in the 45th," he said.

Ruderman didn't directly criticize Reed, but said she's convinced she can do the job better. She said she can combine her tech savvy with her passion for reconnecting people to government, improving the election system and other functions of the office.

Reed, 62, has already announced his bid for re-election.

Ruderman, 32, a graduate of Wesleyan University, was first elected to the state House in 1998 and has been re-elected twice. She is vice chairwoman of the Technology, Telecommunications and Energy Committee and serves on the Appropriations and Rules committees.

The secretary of state is Washington's chief election officer. The office also handles registration of corporations and non-profits and oversees the State Library and archives.
