Man pleads guilty in fatal hit and run
EVERETT -- A man has pleaded guilty to being involved in a hit-and-run accident causing death, a charge similar to vehicular homicide. A bicyclist died in the crash.
Wayne Edward Moran, 60, of Arlington could face as much as four years in prison after entering the plea Wednesday, but his lawyer said he would request an alternative that would mean less prison time followed by treatment for alcoholism. Sentencing was set for Jan. 12.
The case stems from the death of James E. Zentz, 44, of Everett, who was riding a Huffy Tundra 18-speed bicycle about 1 a.m. Sept. 7 on state Route 204 between Everett and Lake Stevens.
According to court papers, Moran and Zentz were at the same tavern before the bicyclist was rear-ended by Moran's 1995 Ford Windstar van.
Moran briefly stopped, asked if Zentz was all right and then left. The State Patrol tracked Moran down after he called authorities and asked about the accident without leaving his name, according to documents filed by Snohomish County prosecutors.
Patrol officials said Moran was being sought at the time on warrants charging him with hit-and-run and driving with a suspended license stemming from an arrest Aug. 13.
