Philip Services will exchange cleanups
OLYMPIA -- Philip Services Corp., a bankrupt company that handles and treats hazardous waste, has signed an agreement with the state promising to clean up some polluted properties in trade for not cleaning up others.
The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in June. It's been reorganized and was approved by the courts to be sold -- but the sales conditions require that Philip Services lose $30 million of environmental liability.
Under the agreement announced yesterday between the company and the state Ecology Department, cleanup liability will fall to other companies responsible for the contamination at Seattle's Pier 91, the Pasco landfill and the Landsburg Mine near Black Diamond. Cleanups in Seattle's Georgetown, Kent, Tacoma and Washougal should not be affected.
The public can comment to Ecology on the agreement until Dec. 27. More information is available at 360-407-6708 or www.ecy.wa.gov/programs/hwtr/foia/index.html
