Two men plead not guilty in 15-year-old slaying

SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER STAFF AND NEWS SERVICES

Two men who were recently charged with killing a Port Orchard woman more than 15 years ago pleaded not guilty yesterday to first-degree murder.

Seattle police say they tied Roland Augustin Pitre Jr. and Frederick James McKee to the 1988 death of Pitre's wife, Cheryl, with the help of DNA evidence and a new witness. The 38-year-old woman was found badly beaten in the trunk of her car, which was parked near Lake Union.

Cheryl Pitre's relatives crowded into a King County courtroom yesterday for the defendants' first appearances in the case. Both men were serving prison time for unrelated offenses when they were arrested.

In a written statement, the woman's two children said she "was truly a loving and wonderful mother who cared so very deeply for the two of us. We know that she watches over us daily, and her spirit helps give us the strength that we need to succeed in life."
