Airport promotions process 'tainted,' McDermott says
SEATAC -- U.S. Rep. Jim McDermott, acting on complaints from security workers at Sea-Tac Airport, has asked the workers' federal employer to rescind several recent staff promotions there, calling the process "tainted."
McDermott's letter to Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge noted that the Transportation Security Administration's personnel contractor recently misplaced promotional applications from several Sea-Tac workers. More than 200 security workers sent a letter to the Transportation Security Administration and others recently saying many who wanted promotions didn't get them because of irregularities.
"Nothing less than a complete reversal can hope to restore confidence in TSA," McDermott wrote.
There was no immediate response from Ridge or his agency. A spokeswoman said comment would be premature because the Transportation Security Administration is investigating the workers' claims about promotions, as well as allegations that a supervisor accepted money to help some aspiring workers apply for promotions.
McDermott's letter keyed on a published statement by the Transportation Security Administration's Sea-Tac director, Bob Blunk, that some applications had been misplaced by a TSA contractor. But Blunk said the promotions ultimately were awarded on merit to "some really great folks."
